Often we face realities in life that do not align with our desires, and then we call them misfortunes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Often too, when we continue to perceive them as misfortunes, it becomes less likely for our hearts to be open to accept them, and it will be difficult for us to strive to overcome the impacts or find solutions to the problems we face. Hard to \"move on,\" as today's youth would say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There is a question that always arises when someone is hit by a heavy trial: why me? Why this illness? Why is it this condition that I have to go through?<\/p>\n\n\n\n The question \"why\" itself is not wrong. In fact, it is important. But there is a difference between a question that drags us deeper into the pit of despair, and a question that brings us up to the surface to look for a way out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A person afflicted with a prolonged illness, for instance, will quickly accept it, then rise and make an effort to strive, when they no longer question why they have to be sick and why they must go through that illness. But rather, it is when they are able to \"see\" from another perspective: that this illness might be God's way to wash away sins, to bring them closer back to Him, to teach a patience that could not possibly be learned anywhere else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I saw this firsthand in my wife. For years facing lupus and low vision, there were times when that \"why\" question came. But over time, she increasingly replaced that question with: what for? What am I given this trial for? What can I do with it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Changing perspective does not mean pretending that everything is fine. It does not mean you cannot be sad or cannot complain. But it means choosing not to stop there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Happiness, I believe, does not belong to those whose lives are easy. It belongs to those who are able to find meaning \u2014 even in the midst of the things they least desire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And the choice to see from a different perspective?
